Season 2024

JANUARY
GBSA SEMINAR

GBSA hosted a fantastic seminar weekend for the coaches and officials. We had the opportunity to get an insight into the inner workings of GBSA, upcoming projects like the GBSA website and VLE, and learned about what it entails to be a World Skate official.

A highlight was coach Lauren being nominated to have a go at live calling a free dance as the Technical Specialist. It was very nerve-wracking but a great experience.

It was also great to see our coaching friends from around the country, have a catch up and collaborate.

MARCH

Couples training session with Robert Marriott

We had a great couples focussed session with Rob who has training in this discipline. It was also a great opportunity for our male athletes to have some feedback from one of the top GB men's solo dance skaters. Huge thank you to Rob for all of his help, we can't wait for his next visit.

MARCH

1. training weekend at Breydon Arena
2. Chapatim training seminar - Portugal
3. Competition Simulation event with team MK

The team Elite Pro skaters and parents travelled the the national's rink in Great Yarmouth for the weekend. It was a fantastic weekend with great improvements seen from all skaters. A big thank you to team RetroSkate for hosting us for the weekend. It was a great opportunity for the athletes to have a practice on the nationals rink. As always, the team support and sportsmanship shown by the skaters and parents was outstanding.

Chapatim seminar 2024

In the Easter holidays, team Elite took 8 skaters and 2 coaches to the Chapatim Seminar hosted in Porto, Portugal. The skaters had some fantastic opportunities both on and off the rink to enhance their skating skills, fitness and dance abilities. For the majority of our skaters, this was their first skating event in another country, they were super excited!

Over the training days, the skaters had sessions in skating skills, flamenco dance, flexibility, agility, pattern dance, timing, turns, clusters, contemporary dance, and travellings.

A highlight of the trip was being trained by Hugo and Fernanda who are both very talented coaches. Coach Lauren Knows Hugo very well from when she was training, he used to come to England to coach the GB squad.

We had the opportunity to be marked by a TS during the dance and cluster sections. Evie, Marla and Stefi were awarded KPs in their dances, with Stefi being a standout in her age group being asked to demonstrate the correct way to do KP4 on the Rumba. Rubee achieved high levels on her cluster and even got a 'wow' from Hugo on the element!

Our skaters really enjoyed meeting the Portuguese and Spanish skaters who attended the event. They were all really friendly and welcoming. It was also lovely to see the skaters dancing together in the dance classes.

During the lunch break, we had great lunchtime entertainment, one of the top senior men's free skaters was training his triple jumps, and we got to see a senior couple in action.

We learned so much from this trip, and cannot wait to get back to the UK to implement all of the new knowledge. All of the Elite athletes worked really hard in all the sessions and were great ambassadors for team Elite. We are so proud of them.

Competition Simulation

At the end of March, we invited team MK to join us for a competition simulation event where all of the National Championships athletes performed their Pattern dance/Style dance and Free dances.

It was a really great event for the athletes to practice dealing with competition nerves and performing for judges and a crowd. We saw some fantastic skating!

The skaters quickly made friends, especially the MK and Elite Tots skaters. The day was full of great support from the audience and coaches and the skaters really rose to the occasion. We are super excited for the GBSA competitions coming up, and can't wait to see team MK at future events to cheer them on and catch up!

APRIL

It was a great weekend of learning about competition nerves and preparation. We had some great technical score highlights - all cadet skaters achieved a L1 in their Rumba pattern dance, with Katie achieving L2!

We had a fantastic weekend doing what we love with our super supportive team! Lots of improvements to work on back at training before the next events!

April marked the start of the 2024 competition season for the Team Elite Pro athletes.

1. GBSA Style dance competition

2. Crystal Tulip Cup competition - Holland

GBSA Styledance competition

Elite took their cadet, youth and senior skaters to the first competition of the season - GBSA Styledance competition. This is also the first competiton run for just styledance this early in the season, with the purpose of helping the skaters with competition experience and enabling them to get a RollArt PDF before National Championships.

Most of the Elite team have stepped up in standard from the 2023 season, we are so proud of how much improvement they have shown  in the lead up to season 2024 and their resilience training harder elements and techniques. Ella skated at National Championships standard for the first time. Marla and Stefi have skated up from RDC to National level this season. Marla, Ella, Stefi and Katie all competed in their first Style dance. Katie moved up to Cadet this season. Eva moved up to Youth category this season.

Crystal Tulip Cup - Holland

Lauren and a team of five athletes set off for the Crystal Tulip cup competition hosted in the Netherlands. The last time coach Lauren was at this event was in 2011 where she competed in Espoir and came 6th! The last time Rubee and Eva competed here, Eva was a tot and Rubee had her first piece of choreography from Lauren for her Cancan freedance.

This event has not been run for five years, we were so exicted to hear that it was going ahead this season and knew we wanted to take a team!

Hannah and Eartha competed in Mini Ladies solo dance

Katie in Cadet Ladies solo dance

Eva in Youth Ladies solo dance

Rubee in Senior Ladies solo dance

Over all, there were 134 athletes competing from GB, Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. It was lovely to see some familiar faces who we have met at other internationals in 2023 and from the international training weekends.

At this event, the skaters had 10 minutes practice for each compulsory dance, 15 mins for their SD, and 15 for FD. It was a very well run and organised event!

Because we had skaters in 4/7 events at this competition, we had time to do some exploring in the local village, in Rotterdam, at the Tulip fields and Gouda.

Competing first from Elite were the Mini ladies, who looked fantastic in their first competition of the season. Big should out to Hannah who moved up a standard to Mini this year. We are super impressed with both girls at their first solo dance international competition!

Next up were Katie, Eva and Rubee in the Style dance section of their competition. All three of our Elite skaters had Personal Bests in their RollArt score!! What a great result! Especially well done to Katie as this was her first international competition!

Katie skated her Latin medley SD, Eva skated her Masquerade ball inspired SD and Rubee skated to Earth Melodies/Celtic Folk genres for her SD.

Free dance competitions were held over the last two days of the event, it was great to see so many talented skaters with entertaining choreography!

Hannah and Eartha both got a PB in their FD score! Hannah skated beautifully to music from Avatar, and Eartha wowed us with a fantastic interpretation of Medusa.

Katie Skated an enchanting freedance inspired by a music box ballerina - she showed great consistency in her performance and travel levels.

The youth free dance event saw Eva achieve her first international medal and a PB in her RollArt score! She even scored her first international cluster! It was a fantastic skate.

Rubee was last to skate for team Elite, despite the wobbles she fought for her performance and dazzled the audience with her WW2 inspired free dance.

Highlights

  • Eva placed 2nd in youth ladies solo dance
  • Hannah scored her first L1 travel
  • Eartha and Hannah both passed their Elementary tests through their RollArt score!
  • Eartha came 18th/29 in the FD portion of the competition
  • Katie consistently scored TrL3 and scored her first DStsqL1. She also passed her preliminary, Inter-bronze and Bronze dance tests through her RollArt score.
  • Katie placed 9th/19 in her first international and first year in Cadet ladies solo dance

  • Rubee scored PdSqL1, ClSqL2 and ASqL2
  • Rubee placed 4th in SD and 7th over all with a new PB of 90.18

The final part of the trip was the medal ceremony and the gala. In the medal ceremony, all the skaters received a participation certificate with their ranking on and a beautiful tulip keyring gift from the organisers of the event. It was a great chance for all the skaters to get celebrated for their hard work and to socialise with the other skaters.

The most amazing part of the award ceremony was seeing Eva collect her 2nd place medal in the youth ladies solo dance category! She smashed her personal best score and achieved Team Elite's first international medal. Was an incredible achievement and she will go down in history for her medal!

After the awards ceremony, the skaters all enjoyed a complimentary meal together - buffet style.

The gala was open to the public to come and watch the best skaters in each age category who performed their free dances again. Then all of the competitors skated in a routine which they had practiced throughout the week. It was super fun to watch and to participate in! We had an opportunity to skate again on the rink to take some team photos and have pictures with our skating friends from abroad!

May

In May, GBSA hosted the first Pre-Nationals event for the tots, mini and espoir skaters - the FD competiton. The athletes had the opportunity to skate their free dances on the Nationals rink - Breydon Arena - and get scored by a RollArt panel.

First up were the practice sessions for each of the age groups. For most of our skaters this was the first competition of the season, and their first time competing at National level. This season saw the largest Pro team Elite have coached to Championships level compete, with a lot of athletes competing for the first time at this standard.

Gabriella, Saffron and Stanley were all fist time Championships competitors this season, as well as both of our couples (Ellie & Stanley, and Beatrix & Thomas) we are so proud of how much they improved to be able to reach this high standard of competition.

The boys chilling before their compulsory dances.

Gabriella, our Tot skater, took to the floor for her practice Glide waltz and enjoyed skating on the huge rink. She skated beautifully in her glide waltz competition. She then skated her Free dance, inspired by the movie Frozen. She finished in a great 6th place.

Team Elite had two mini skaters competing - Hannah and Eartha. For both girls, this was their second season competing at National level with team Elite. Their compulsory dances were La Vista Cha Cha and Denver Shuffle. Both girls brought a lot of personality to the rink on their upbeat pattern dances. Eartha smashed her Denver Shuffle, placing first in this dance and achieving L2 and L1 on her patterns.

The mini Freedance event was fantastic to watch, all the skaters brought their A-game. Hannah was very artistic in her Avatar inspired freedance. And Eartha wowed the audience with her very unique and skillful Medusa inspired FD. Hannah finished 6th place overall in her first year as Mini. Eartha exceeded all expectations and climbed to First place in her amazing FD. She was crowned the Great British Champion of Mini Ladies Solo Dance.

They had two compulsory dances - Kinder Waltz and Manhattan blues. Both couples exceeded expectations, finishing the dance section in first and second place. We were especially excited that Thomas and Beatrix scored a L1 KW!

They then competed in free dance. Beatrix and Thomas performed their Hunger Games inspired free dance with a great performance and bravery. August marks the third Elite annual competition! We host at Hartpury Univeristy at our amazing home rink! This year we saw over 180 athletes compete in a range of dance, freedance and team events. This day we also celebrated 5 years of Elite Artistic Skating Club! We are so blessed to have a fantastic team of coaches, skaters and parents who bring our team forwards every year.

Stating out with our newcomers! This season, Elite introduced two newcomers to the amazing world of competitive artistic skating. It is a super exciting time. Bawan and Eliza took to the floor for their newcomer solo dances - Glide waltz and Arabesque&edges. Both of our skaters thoroughly enjoyed being on the rink in front of an audience and getting dressed in artistic costumes. They had fabulous skates, both coming away with a medal in their first competition! Our novice skaters did fabulous in their compulsory dances, with Ella gaining a bronze medal!

The next event was the Free dance Challenge - a new event for this competition where skaters followed a set free dance pattern to samba music. All the competitiors loved the atmosphere when skating this event! Gabriella came away with her first solo Gold medal, Eliza came 2nd in her first every free dance event and Bawan came 3rd in his first ever free dance event!

Hannah and Eartha both skated up to Elementary this competition for solo dance. They performed La Vista Cha cha and Denver Shuffle. Both girls looked fabulous on the floor and gave great facials! Eartha won the event and Hannah was awarded her first Elementary bronze medal.

Prelim was a super competitive group - most of the entrants had competed in the Espoir GBSA national Championships. The Elite skaters looked great on the floor in their solo dances. Saffron did amazing and came away with a silver medal. Our Prelim couples also competed and had a great skate. Ellis & Stanley took 1st place, Beatrix & Thomas came 2nd.

Next up was the Inter-bronze/Bronze solo dance. Our skaters were competing at this level for the first time. They were preforming the Coalesce waltz and Rumba - both of which were new World Skate dances for the 2024 season. Katie won her first Bronze event, with Ella coming in 3rd. All of the skaters were beautiful on the rink - with some lovely pictures captured by Sarah Blackwell.

The next event was another new event for this year - The Travelling challenge! Skaters had one attempt to complete a travelling sequence - following World Skate rules. This was a great event to watch as it was full of anticipation, and lots of crowd participation. Well done to all the athletes who entered this event as it was a hard challenge! Eartha, Beatrix, Katie won their age categories. Ellie was awarded 2nd place in her age group. Gabriella and Marla were both awarded 3rd place in their age groups.

September

1. Couples Training Day with Justin Wootten
2. Cup of Europe Training Day with GBSA

Now season 2024 National Championships are complete, most of the Elite athletes are making preparations for the next season. September is a time for upskilling.

We welcomed Justin to Elite for a couples focused training day. Justin gave us a great insight into how we can improve our couples skating. He has extensive knowledge which he has gained from personal experiences being a World Class couples skater and competing for GB in many international events. We are so grateful Justin could help us in this discipline. Eliza&Tom, Ellie&Stanley worked super hard in the session and showed improvement as the day went on. We are hoping to continue to work on what Justin has taught us and wow him in the future competitions.

Two of our Elite skaters still had one more competition for the season - Cup of Europe in Switzerland. The COE training day was a great opportunity to get together with the rest of Team GB. Katie and Eva both had to perfomr their SD and FD for Justin and Nick and got really useful personalised feedback. The skaters also did sessions on technique, pattern dance and spins. For Katie, it was a great way to meet the rest of Team GB as this would be her first international for GB. Both of the girls made friends, worked hard in the sessions and showed improvement through the sessions. Well done girls.

October

Cup of Europe - Zürich, Switzerland

The final competition of the 2024 season - Cup of Europe! Team Elite had two skaters selected for this competition, they travelled along with coach Lauren and other members of Team GB to Zurich. The first event on the agenda was the Opening Ceremony. The Swiss skating federation were celebrating their 100 year anniversary, what a fantastic milestone to be part of!

After the Opening Ceremony, Team GB had a lovely team meal together. It was a great chance for us all to catch up and relax before a week of competition.

Practice sessions were 20 minutes per group - the skaters had their SD music played for their practice. Seeing as they only had one practice, the skaters had to use it for both their SD and FD.

Katie and Eva both had really good practice sessions, they looked strong on the floor and their confidence grew after being on the rink.

We cheered on the Team GB Espoir skaters in their Free dance event. At this competition, the organisers decided Mini and Espoir would only compete in FD and not in compulsory dance. Both of the GB skaters did amazing, we loved watching them!

Katie's Style dance competition was next. She was performing her Latin Medley SD for the final time! This SD was full of personality, joy, facial expressions and energy! Katie brought the party to Zurich. She was photographed by Raniero Corbeleitti Photographie, a famous photographer int he skating world. Her professional pictures show how much fun she had whilst performing. Also a big thank you to Ann Odhams as she took some beautiful photos of Katie too!

The next day, Eva had her SD competition. Here genre was Classical this year, we decided to so a Masquerade Ball inspired routine with Gothic infulence. Eva skated an absolute blinder! She showed great power, extension and performance. Most importantly, she look like she really enjoyed being on the rink showing off her improvement and beautiful skating. She came off the rink feeling so proud of herself, it was a memorable moment. Well done to all of the Team GB SD skaters, they were all amazing to watch!

On to free dance! Katie was skating her balletic FD to classical music, the theme was inspired by a ballerina in a music box. She created some beautiful balletic lines on the rink and showed great resilience. In Katie's first Cup of Europe, she has come away with a mountain of new knowledge both about skating and herself, it is great for her to start her international journey. This is just the beginning for Katie, she is showing consistently how hard she works and how talented she is. We are so proud of her bravery stepping onto the international stage and she enjoyed every minute of the experience.

The final skate for team Elite was Eva's free dance. She was skating to very dramatic and intruiging music - the theme was 'Is she Good, or is she Evil?'  She portayed her character very well and maintained great energy thoughout her whole program. It was a very powerful routine and we all loved watching her performance. Eva had a PB in her international score, scoring 13 more points than the previous season, and achieving a L2 FoSq. We are so proud of Eva's resilience and hard work, her improvement this season has been huge. We can't wait to see her skate next season, showing off her new knowledge and skills.

The team atmosphere was fantastic - all of the athletes made great friends. This competition was also a great opportunity to catch up with our skating friends from around Europe.

Our skaters got to also be part of the closing ceremony. A great way to end a week of amazing skating.

November

Elite took a team of 8 skaters and 2 coaches to the World Skate Camp in Spinea, Italy. This year we got to bring a much larger team - double to size of last years! The skaters were all prepared to learn so many new things from the best coaches the World has to offer.

The first day was an explore day in Venice  which happened to be Coach Karlee's 50th Birthday! It was great to see the famous sights, eat Italian cuisine, practice speaking Italian and do some shopping!

World Skate Camp - Spinea, Italy

The first two days of training were for the Cadet and Youth skaters. Both Anasztazia, Ella and Katie were excited to come back to the camp after such a wonderful experience last year. Betsy, Saffron and Stanley were coming for the first time, all of them about to experience their first ever international skating event!

SAFFRON

Saffron has shown amazing self motivation this season and attention to detail in all her sessions. From winter solos 2023 to nationals 2024 Saffron improved at a rate of knots by always listening, acting on feedback and creating fantastic training habits. We are so proud of how you push yourself out of your comfort zone in training and learning how to handle competition nerves. Her confidence shone through at Nationals where she kept her cool and scored a personal best leading to a Vice Championship title! She had so much improvement in her skills which enabled her to score a RollArt score high enough to pass her Bronze test! We are so proud of her resilience and determination, as well as her beautiful skating. Well done Saffron!

Role Model

ELLIE

This athlete was voted for the most in this years awards and it’s not surprising to us at all. Ellie embodies all of the Elite attributes and displays them both in training and at events. She is always checking in on her teammates, cheering the loudest, respectful to everyone, making new friends, showing fantastic professionalism and passion, determination to succeed and planning how to achieve her goals. Ellie's positivity and determination are infectious to the rest of the team members and makes her a wonderful athlete to coach. She is a wonderful member of team Elite and a great athlete for our new tots to look up to. Well done Ellie

Team Elite all got together to celebrate what a fantastic year we have had, we have made a lot of great memories and had fantastic achievements! It is super important to our team to celebrate both big and small wins and to thank all of the volunteers who keep our club running so smoothly. Our three big awards are chosen by the Team Elite coaches, the 10 C's awards are won by a voting system. It wouldn't be a party with out a buffet, party games and Christmas dress up! The awards showcased how we are developing young athletes into professional sports people who are well rounded and learn in the best environment. Congratulations to all our skaters, coaches and parents, we all think the atmosphere of our club is outstanding - it is something we have built as a team

Coachability

Anasztazia

World Skate Camp and the Chapatim seminar really made obvious how coachable this athlete is. She was able to adapt to different coaching styles very quickly, showed respect and good communication and strived to put into practice all of her feedback. This is an important skill for a high performing athlete, well done Anasztazia.

Congratulations to the Silver Medallist - Rubee

Bronze Medallist - Saffron, Ellie, Ella LB, Evie

Courage

Ellie & Stanley

Couples skating involves fearlessness and a lot of trust in your partner and coach. Ellie and Stanley have formed a partnership where they can push themselves outside of their comfort zone, attempting difficult skills which are very dangerous to perform. They are willing to give anything a go - which is a choreographers dream! We are so excited about what these two are bringing to the table each session, and we see a very bright future for this couple. Well done both!

Congratulations to the Silver Medallist - Eartha

Bronze Medallist - Jaxon, Betsy, Ella LB and Gabriella

Roller skating is being driven forwards by World Skate to increase the level of skating by introducing harder features and elements. Beatrix shows every session that she is not willing to give up on learning these harder skills and will practice until she gets it right 100% of the time. She asks very intellectual and technical questions and shows great interest in learning the tiny details of techniques. Well done Bea!

This season marks the beginning of Eliza and Thomas' couples journey, and the start of Eliza's competitive career. Couples is all about trust and communication, these two athletes have become a duo with a great working partnership. They have great patience, understanding and care for one another. And they have been really enjoying working towards championships 2025 together with lots of giggles along the way. Well done Eliza and Tom!

Capability

Eartha

Eartha has demonstrated every training session this year just how capable she is to reach her full potential. She has bucket loads of talent and the hard work ethics to match. She continually pushes herself into the growth learning zone and always seeks to understand how to improve her skating. She has shown she can achieve great levels on dance and travellings and works well under the pressure of a competition. No feature is too scary for her to try, she is fearless and resilient. She had a fantastic season winning the FD GBSA competition and gaining her second GB National Championship Title. Well done Eartha!

Elite On Camera

Coming soon ...

The Elite Pro Team have been filming a short documentary film for the last 5 months. It has been a great opportunity to give an insight of what artistic roller skating is, who we are as a team and to get more people into the sport.

Coming soon ...

Stanley has been filming a very exciting project with a film production crew. He aduitioned and landed the role of a WW2 skater! He had the opportunity to learn how to skate on some of the first roller skate designs. The premier of the film is 24th January 2025. We are so excited to see him in action for his debut on the big screen!

Stanley was flown to Belfast to shoot the film - the film director worked closely with Stanley and his parents through the process. Stanley did an amazing job in the vintage skates. He had the full star treatment getting his hair styled in London!

Filming

The film crew came to several of our skating sessions to film what it is like to be on Team Elite. We had some behind the scenes filming with some athletes. The film crew covered what it is like at a compeititon as they attended and filmed all day at the Elite SWSF. There were interviews with several of the athletes and the Head Coach - Lauren Jarvis. We also did some silhouette shots as a team and individual shoots which was a fantastic experience.
